Timmy Hansen is looking to close the gap in the title race in Hungary this weekend, where he’ll be racing at a track with huge personal significance.
The Swede claimed his first supercars victory in rallycross at the Nyirad Motorsport Centrum during the 2013 European Rallycross season and is now hoping to add to his Hungarian haul.
The tight and twisty Nyirad circuit is regarded as one of the best in Europe, with around 24 metres of elevation changes thanks to its construction in an old quarry.
„It’s a great track, very good, so I’m very excited,“ said Hansen. „Last time I raced there I won, it was my first victory in supercars.“
„It’s a challenging racing track, super fast with walls everywhere,“ he continued. „You need to push hard but you also need to not put it in the wall.“
Hansen has won races at Essay, Montalegre, and the MJP Arena and currently sits 11 points off the points lead, behind both brother Kevin Hansen and Topi Heikkinen, with just four rounds remaining – the trio having shared all of the event victories this season between them.
While the title fight remains close between all three drivers, Timmy Hansen feels that he needs to dominate in Hungary to give him his best chance of claiming the first-ever TitansRX crown.
„If I want to catch up in the points I need to win both races in Hungary,“ he said. „That’s going to be tough, it’s such a small points margin as well. It’s hard, it depends on the randomness of the qualifying, a lot of things happen.“
„I’m quite a way back in that I can only gain three points per race if the others are second or third so I need to have a very good weekend there to be in the mix for Buxtehude.“
